Frequently asked questions

Thinking about treatment? Here are answers to some of the questions I’m asked most often about consultations, treatments and what to expect.
Or, if you have questions, you are curious but you are not ready to book a consultation. I recognise this! That's why I run Curiosity Shop events...private evenings for you and your friends to explore the world of skin, accelerated ageing and aesthetics in a calm safe private space.

Following a consultation and clinical assessment, a prescription-only botulinum toxin medicine may be considered as one possible treatment option for certain facial lines.

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the release of chemical signals between nerves and selected muscles. This reduces muscle activity for a period of time and can temporarily improve the appearance of certain lines associated with facial movement.

Treatment is not appropriate for everyone and a consultation does not necessarily result in a prescription or treatment.

Depending on the individual assessment, prescription-only botulinum toxin medicines may be considered for certain facial lines, including frown lines, forehead lines and lines around the eyes.

Botulinum toxin also has licensed medical and aesthetic uses for certain other conditions. Where relevant, suitability will be assessed individually and treatment will only be considered where clinically appropriate.

It may also be used to improve underarm sweating and to improve the appearance of neck bands.

There are lots of ways Botulinum Toxin can be used and this is why a consultation will always be required to confirm if it is the best choice for you.

At Dr Rebecca Griffiths -Medical Aesthetics, the aesthetic consultation is so comprehensive, that the actual treatment session can often be completed in a relatively short amount of time with minimal downtime. Prior to treatment the skin is cleaned with a medical grade product then temporarily marked up with a wipeable aesthetic pencil.

Pre – treatment photographs will be taken for your personal medical record. A very fine needle is used and most clients report minimal, if any discomfort. Pre-treatment with a skin-numbing cream is available if required for notably anxious clients.

All patients are offered two sessions as part of a single treatment. This is especially useful for patients new to the world of botulinum toxin treatments and allows a ‘low and slow’ approach. It may be unnecessary to ‘top-up’ the initial treatment at the review appointment scheduled for 14 days after the first, but if necessary, free adjustments can be made. Often, returning clients find that only a single session is required to get the desired aesthetic outcome.

Results take up to 21 days to fully show and will gradually wear off between 6-12 weeks. Most clients report normal movement has returned at 12 weeks+. There are reported cumulative benefits in maintaining a treatment schedule of 3-6 monthly appointments.

Treatment is safe and suitable for most people but will be assessed during your consultation and will depend on your individual concerns, medical history and any medication you are taking.

If a prescription-only botulinum toxin medicine is considered appropriate, it will only be prescribed following an individual clinical assessment. Treatment may not be suitable in some circumstances, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

HA filler works be providing physical replacement of lost volume. The hyaluronic acid also attracts water to actively hydrate the tissues.

HA fillers can be used in a variety of different places to achieve a variety of different aesthetic outcomes. They are best used when they replace or restore lost volume. In this role they are an excellent tool when wanting to rejuvenate facial features that have declined with age.

At Dr Rebecca Griffiths – Medical Aesthetics you will arrive for your filler treatment appointment fully briefed in what is going to happen. The comprehensive nature of the FREE aesthetic consultation means that you will have had plenty of time and space to discuss your proposed treatment plan and will have a full understanding of what is able to be achieved.

Pre-treatment photographs will be taken and stored in your personal records. Your skin will then be numbed for approximately 15mins using a topical cream. The skin is then cleaned using a medical grade product before the procedure is started.

The filler is injected using a purposefully designed needle from a pre-filled syringe thus maintaing sterility from packaging to placement. Once placed, massage may be performed to improve the finished result.

The results when using filler are instantaneous, but the final aesthetic appearance is best judged at 2-4 weeks when any swelling has completely resolved.

In certain areas, for example lip rejuvenation, when in pursuit of a natural and less detectable result there is sometimes value in more than one treatment session. This allows more intricate work to be titrated carefully and for the final volume required to be better predicted.
